Laurel Neme's Animal Investigators is surely one of the most important books of the century. I look at my own two Maine Coon cats and think how lucky they are: a good home, food and water on demand, and lots of love and petting of that beautiful long fur. But to think of those poor walrus and elephants, killed for their ivory; the bear destroyed for his bile or gallbladders (the photograph of those Asiatic black bears crammed into their tiny cage at the bear farm nearly killed me); and the beautiful Brazilian birds done in for their feathers. Ms Neme evokes all the cruelty of these evil deeds, along with the heroism of the men working to eliminate such outrages in this well written book filled with details and illustrations; and with all the suspense of a crime thriller. A mystery author myself, I couldn't have done as well! I'll never again see a walrus or elephant or black bear without without my eyes filling.

recommended read for anyone with a concern for wildlife

The condition of the book left much to be desired, poor condition overall, several of the pages toward the back of the book were crimped and torn

Animal Investigators is a crime novel which gives the reader a glimpse of the trail blazing scientific work being done at the Clark R. Bavin U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Forensics Laboratory in Ashland, Oregon. Crime scene investigations are not just applied to the human species, but to the animal world where people poach, exploit, and sell walrus tusks, bear gallbladders, and brilliant bird feathers, all for financial gain. Neme exposes the underbelly of the animal black market which demonstrates the difficulty of infiltrating such a far extended web of criminals. With punishment terms not matching the crimes against these animals, it is no wonder that traffickers of animal parts continue to capitalize in this rarely seen under world. The individuals of this amazing laboratory are not just protecting endangered species, they are creating change and awareness towards conservation.

I read Dr. Neme's book while I was doing research for a class on illegal wildlife trafficking. Neme's book laid the foundation for the rest of my research and helped guide the course itself. Her book completely captivated me, as any crime novel would. I wish there would not be a need for a sequel to this book but unfortunately the problems she addresses are not going away soon. I will read any book Dr. Neme writes. Her methods and messages are clear. I praise her dedication to wildlife and for giving a (very necessary) voice to the victims of unlawful poaching.

While animal rights are often relegated to an extreme aspect of environmentalism by politicians, the palpable cruelty that befalls animals has in fact motivated some of the earliest international treaties on animal rights. The International Convention on the Regulation of Whaling was the first international environmental agreement (1946) and continues to endure many claims to cultural exception. The Convention on the International trade of Endangered Species (CITES, 1975), is one of the few environmental agreements which directly interfaces with law enforcement. It is within this context that Laurel Neme's Animal Investigators provides a close-up account of how the international trade in endangered species is monitored and enforced. Focusing on three key case studies of walrus poaching in Alaska, the trade in bear bile across Asia and exotic bird feathers from Brazil, Neme documents the challenges of animal forensics. Writing with clarity and investigative zeal, she follows the path from crime scene to labs to court rooms. At times her narrative reads like a crime novel and at others like a biology lesson. Yet this synthesis of styles and themes is so essential in capturing the gravity of crimes against our fellow organisms worldwide.Unlike most international environmental narratives, in this one, the United States comes out particularly positive. Not only was the US a founding signatory to CITES, but it also hosts one of the key animal forensic labs that investigates over 30,000 species of animal crime victims. The staff of the Clark R Bavin U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Forensics Laboratory are key protagonists in the book. However, Neme also acknowledges the heroic efforts by law enforcement officials worldwide, and particularly in Brazil, in preventing the trade in these species. It is no wonder that she has been invited to present her findings before Interpol officials on the one hand, while receiving cover endorsements from scientists such as Jane Goodall and Richard Leakey on the other.Given the range of her investigative coverage and her strong roots as a social scientist, one may have expected more in terms of policy recommendations for dealing with what she calls the "trifecta of low risk, weak penalties and high profits" that continue to hamper further progress in this field. She could have also developed the case for how terrorist financing has been linked to trade in endangered species (initially mentioned in the book). Finally, the book could have addressed the question of cultural transition and environmental education to counter these practices. Despite these minor deficiencies, Animal Investigators is a much needed, readable and informative account of a little-known underworld of cruel commerce, and the courageous scientists and law enforcement officials whose work deserves recognition.

Until relatively recently, crimes against protected species have been challenging to prove in court. (How can we determine that this organ was taken from a protected animal and not from an unprotected animal when they are both identical?) Animal Investigators documents the creation of the first forensics lab designed especially for the investigation of crimes against wildlife. Dr. Neme follows three specific investigations as scientists with the Fish and Wildlife Service and other agencies, use science to build their cases against poachers, illegal traders, and consumers of illegal wildlife paraphernalia. This book is incredibly interesting and easily approachable for the general reader. Those with an interest in wildlife crime, forensics, or even if you enjoy a good mystery, this book will suit you well.
