Review

I loved Parenting in the Eye of the Storm. While Katie Naftzger defines her work as 'a guide for adoptive parents in the teen years', I found it to be so very much more. Inside this book I found priceless wisdom and insight into the wounded hearts of adopted teens. The tools Ms Naftzger shares here are like a flashlight and compass for parents to light the way for their struggling adopted teen and bring them home. Well worth the investment of time! Author: Nancy L Thomas, author of When Love is Not Enough; a Guide to Parenting Children with Reactive Attachment DisorderNaftzger provides useful day to day insights and practical suggestions for adoptive families with teens. Her book is filled with personal accounts and situations that are both from her personal experience as well as her clinical practice. This combination of lived and professional insight in the adoption world is rare and makes this book a must-have for all adoptive families. Author: Iris Chin Ponte Ph.D., President of Ponte and Chau Consulting Inc and Director of The Henry Frost Children's ProgramAfter my adoptive daughter's teen years, I appreciate even more the value of Katie Naftzger's keen insights and sage advice. By sharing adoptee's stories and empathizing, as only a once teen adoptee can, Naftzger ably steers adoptive parents through the choppy waters of adolescence. Author: Melissa Ludtke, author of Touching Home in China: in search of missing girlhoods.Wow. Life changing. No nonsense. Filled with fresh ideas My daughter ( adopted internationally) is 14. I'm already using Katie's advice in day to day life. You'll need a hard copy to highlight and leave on your bedstand. Author: Beth O’Malley M.Ed adoptee, older adoptive mom and adoption professional. As I read this book, it resonated with me deeply through my professional lenses as Executive Director of ATTACh and in my role as an adoptive mother with four teens. I had so many 'ah-ha' moments as Katie shared her stories and they rang true. How I wish every parent raising a teen could read this insightful and poignant book. Author: Mary M. McGowan, Executive Director of The Association for Training on Trauma and Attachment in ChildrenThis book gives a unique insight into the world of adopted teenagers. The authors personal experience and thought provoking anecdotes add significant value to the content, and the practical strategies make this a very useful resource for adoptive parents. Author: Jennifer Jones, Inspired Foundations www.inspiredfoundations.co.ukThis is the most insightful book I've read about parenting adopted teens. Naftzger draws from her own experience as an adoptee and a therapist to offer parents practical tools for improving communication with their child, without ever being preachy or prescriptive. Most importantly, she honors the emotions, integrity and intellectual capacity of the adopted teen at every turn, helping parents better understand the complexity of their child's experience. Author: Nicole Opper, Director/Producer, Off and Running: An American Coming of Age StoryThis book is Katie at her best ... a clear, gentle voice cutting through emotional chaos to provide needed structure and steps for change. A must-read! Author: Stacy Schroeder, Exec Dir/Pres of KAAN: The Korean-American Adoptee Adoptive Family Network (also adoptive parent and sibling)

I recommend this book for parents as well as for therapists working with parents who are struggling in parenting their adopted teens (I’m a therapist myself). The book doesn’t scold parents or teens. The author, a Korean-born adoptee of white American parents, has both deep empathy for parents and teens and very practical hands-on guidance for navigating fraught emotional dynamics (the kind that can fill parents and teens alike with guilt, anger, and helplessness). The book’s driving message is that understanding the losses that adopted teens have experienced from birth and learning the skills to acknowledge, bear, and address these losses offers parents clarity about what may really be going on for their adopted teen who is angry, depressed, putting up a wall, anxious, or in some other way conveying distress. The book begins by describing the multiple losses that are inherent in being adopted, among them loss of continuity, of control and of closure. The author emphasizes that love alone is not enough to get through the emotional storms that families can face. The book goes on to describe skills that can help parents become more empathetic and authoritative with their teens and provides examples of how to use these skills to create the safety, security and mutual-respect necessary to a loving relationship. There are informative vignettes throughout the book that bring alive the problematic and distressing situations parents and adopted teens can find themselves in. There are also useful examples of how parents can listen and act in ways that put them and their teen in a more constructive and emotionally-connected direction. There is a chapter on trans-racial adoption. Drawing on her own life the author skillfully and clearly describes the differences of opinion, perception, and experience that can arise when parents and their adopted teens are of different races.I have learned things in reading this book that make me much more confident in working with parents of adopted teens, as well as with adopted adults. It’s on my shelf for good.

I've read a lot of books on parenting and adoption. I also have 3 teenagers and have read quite a few teen books. This book has some very good points. The section on "rescuing" is not something I've seen discussed much in other places. However, this book is really poorly written. It is not well organized. She needs a good editor. There are typos and grammatical errors on almost every page. The book transitions constantly from one topic and example to another. It's like reading from a distracted person's viewpoint. It's worth reading if you can look past all of these things for the added perspective. If your teen is a girl, I highly recommend reading Untangled by Lisa Damour. It is VERY well-written and so full of truth and example that it is literally a page-turner. Though not adoption-specific, it has provided more perspective on teen girls than many adoption books. Start there, then add in the special situations of adoption from other books. And if you haven't read Heather Forbes yet, please read her books.

Just finished Katie's book! For a tiny book, it is mighty and to the point. It really felt like Katie worked hard to bring forth the reasons adoption is unique and yet the teens years so much a part of any human experience in a family constellation. I found myself agreeing with her on multiple levels, first as an adoptee who went through this storm and also as a counselor who serves in this invisibly complicated community. There is no book comparable in content and voice. Katie doesn't overpathologize being adopted and yet honors the specific interventions adopted teens and young adults are particularly vulnerable to. I especially appreciate that Katie's lens of being an adoptee is in full view making it essential reading for all adoptive parents and also for fellow adopted people. So many books are written from adoptive parents perspectives, professionals who are also adoptive parents. A triumph for our community that Katie has braved the trend and wrote a truly thoughtful, supportive and interesting book. I have already made this highly recommended reading!

This is a super helpful book for all adoptive parents. Although it focuses on navigating the challenges of the teen years, this book also provides helpful guidance for adoptive parents with young children. I loved it so much that I bought an extra copy for my friend who has two adopted children, ages 3 and 6 years old. It provides much insight into the variety of emotions that can arise for adoptees, while focusing on providing specific suggestions to parents on how to best support children's needs and growing independence. It's a must read for adoptive parents!!!

Important insights into parenting adopted children in their teenage years. I am recommending this book to several parents I know.

Good book, with some interesting insights. But mostly it an enjoyable read due to all the anecdotes. Seems to be more geared to international/ tranracial adoptions.

Uodate: I've now finished the book and am recommending to every adoptive family I know. It's an easy read and has lots of practical advice on common teen problems. Just as advice used by families with biologicical babies and toddlers is not always best for adoptive families, Katie explains why common cultural approaches to teen issues and behavior may also not be the best approach with adopted teens. Great book and perfect timing for our family.

This book offers great insight from a professional who also has personal experience as an adoptee. I am finding the information very valuable, and it will help me greatly as an adoptive parent of a teenager.
