Yes, we all know him and love him for Sherlock Holmes. But Doyle published a great deal of other fiction, including brilliant historical novels, and tales of the supernatural which have inspired film and fiction since his day. This collection aptly titled Tales of Unease provides an excellent introduction to Doyle's speculative short stories and will reward any lover of Victorian fictional prose with treasures a plenty. "The Ring of Thoth" is a marvelous tale and so is "Lot No. 249" and both inspired me personally in the writing of my own novel, The Mummy or Ramses the Damned. I find in all Doyle's work the same rich vocabulary and vivid descriptions I savor in so many 19th Century English writers, but what distinguishes Doyle's work is his great love of action, of pounding narrative full of high incident as well as unforgettable characters and images --- which is why, undoubtedly, Doyle's work has inspired so many films. Again, this little volume functions as an introduction. There is a great deal more, much more, of Doyle to be re-discovered, studied, enjoyed. And speaking of introductions, the essay here on Doyle by David Stuart Davies is excellent.

What arrived is not the same edition pictured. I’m sure the stories are great but I don’t like the fact that what arrived has a completely different, ugly cover than what I ordered.

Loved it - Could not put it down - Conan Doyle is a Master.Diane

Doyle's writing is excellent and the stories were a very enjoyable read. However, they didn't really seem frightening.

Tales of Unease has short stories of variable quality, but Doyle holds your attention with every one. Some stand out with a twist ending. The best one, in my opinion, is Lot 249. Read this at night with all the house lights out except your reading lamp. It might raise the hair on the back of your neck a little.

I reviewed “The Best Supernatural Tales of Arthur Conan Doyle” which contained 15 of Doyle’s short stories. I pointed out that other anthologies of Doyle tales have additional stories. This volume selected and introduced by David Stuart Davies has 15 tales, 9 of them are not in “The Best Supernatural Tales.” The stories are very enjoyable.Davies wrote in his introduction: There can be no doubt that the fifteen stories in this collection are among the very best in the genre. The reasons that they may not have been recognized by the general public is probably because they have been lost in the welter of fiction by Arthur Conan Doyle. Also, like everything else he wrote, they have fallen under the dominating shadow of his potent creation: Sherlock Holmes. While most famous for his Sherlock Holmes books, Doyle wrote over 400 works, including works on historical fiction, true history, science fiction, and adventure and sports stories. He turned to writing when he saw that his medical practice was not successful. He published his first short story in 1879 and his first Sherlock Holmes’ tale in 1887.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has been somewhat type-cast as the author of Sherlock Holmes stories (exactly the thing that he had apprehended, and had consequently decided, somewhat hastily, to do away with the "meddling fellow" for good in Reichenbach). Unfortunately, this type-casting has led to our loss, and has made us unaware of the fact that above-all, he was a wonderful story-teller who knew how to tell a gripping story. The stories in this book all testify to this effect, and should be lapped up immediately. The stories are: -The Ring of ThothThe Lord of Château NoirThe New CatacombThe Case of Lady SannoxThe Brazilian CatThe Brown HandThe Horror of the HeightsThe Terror of the Blue John GapThe Captain of the PolestarHow It HappenedPlaying with FireThe Leather FunnelLot No. 249The Los Amigos FiascoThe Nightmare RoomMany of these are classics on their own merit, and this very-very reasonably priced edition is highly recommended to all!
