What a timely help! I turn 65 later this month, am in a pension plan that provides health care but requires me to sign up for Medicare, and is expected to change for me in ways I won't like next fall, leaving me with dozens of tough questions. Medicare for Dummies to the rescue!After wondering all fall as my U.S. mail was deluged with ads for every imaginable Medicare-related product, I finally understand all my options, and when I have to make each decision about them.The book is easily readable, either straight through as I did, or by going straight to topics of current interest. It is also authoritative - I found no errors in the information provided other than a bit too much optimism about how well ACA/Obamacare would work out once it launched in October 2013. (The author works for AARP, which strongly supported ACA/Obamacare, despite many seniors then and still worrying about its changes harming their interests. That said, I didn't find any objectionable political bias in the book, nor any overt effort to promote AARP beyond listing it among other private resources for seniors in an appendix.)A couple of my key learnings may be of interest: 1) ACA/Obamacare doesn't directly affect those on Medicare beyond lessening a previous subsidy for Medicare Advantage plans; 2) If you want nationwide coverage and freedom to see any doctor willing to see Medicare patients (as I do), traditional Medicare allows that, unlike many Medicare Advantage plans. 3) If you want a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy, to fill in some potential cost risks in traditional Medicare, you have a special window of time as you turn 65 to get that regardless of your current health. 4) If you can't do so because you already have insurance from a former employer (as I currently do), and that later changes, you have a 2 month window to get a Medigap policy then. Miss these windows, and you may not be eligible for Medigap at the same rates or at all.Turning 65? This is your new best friend. Recommended.
No mention of plans F or N. F is a very important option to concider.
Despite being a ‘current’ volume much of the information is out of sync with current requirements. However it is a good basic guide and will provide most with the questions they need to ask before signing up for Medicare.
Very helpful! We were lost trying to figure out what the options were and how best to navigate the choices. I don't necessarily like books that assume I'm a dummy but in this case, I really appreciated how the book presented information in a way that was both sufficiently detailed so that we could make a good choice, yet not so overloaded with fine print that we didn't know which way was up. Thank you AARP/Patricia Barry! You really helped us out.
Helpful book, at least until I discovered a gaping discrepancy between what the book so authoritatively put up in its Figure 4-1, and what I was offered by United Health Care's AARP Medigap policies in California, in August 2018. It this simply a California vs the rest-of-the-country discrepancy?
Medicare is complicated and full of traps. This provided a map of the mind field that helped a lot to navigate the twisted landscape of health coverage. A good and trustworthy source. The pain of the read was not the author’s fault, it is just that complex. They provided the best coverage with the least pain. A must to read for anyone coming up to retirement age.
I've been on Medicare for 3 years already. The book contained a lot of great information that I didn't know. It was written in easy, plain terms - no legal mumbo-jumbo! Very beneficial book!!
Patricia Barry provides clear, precise, and detailed information about Medicare that is supremely well organized. The information you need to make a good decision is always together in one place. There are references to additional sources of help throughout. Huzzah for a great reference book!
I'm 64 and the piranha insurance companies are in my mailbox every day. This book and the one you can order from Social Security will be your bible as you work your way through the plans and the sales pitches. If you are reading this and getting Medicare in 2019, you need this book due to the changes in 2020
