With the author's background, I would have expected her to immediately say that "The Martian" is a movie and analyze it that way.

Since a move of Andy Weir’s “The Martian” is coming out soon, I definitely thought buying the Sidekick to the novel would be worth it. I was counting on it to give a more in-depth look into the characters, the plot, etc. Luckily, Allison Theveny’s Sidekick version of the novel accomplished just that!I was able to understand many of Weir’s writing details that I hadn’t captured my first time through the original book. There were many underlying themes I didn’t pick up on, and I also appreciated the analysis of the characters. While the Sidekick is focused on deeper understanding and analysis, it is still an easy and enjoyable read. Possibly my favorite Sidekick novel yet!I highly recommend everyone read “The Martian” as well as the Sidekick before the movie comes out!

I enjoyed The Martian when I first read it and when my book club announced it would be the book for this month, I purchased the sidekick to refresh my memory and get a better handle on characters, symbolism and nuances of the plot. Since she doesn't review each chapter individually, this isn't a Cliffs Notes type of book and it does not replace reading the novel itself so anyone reading it in order to skip the book will only get a general gist of things as opposed to the full experience.Overall, this Sidekick does a good job of providing an overview of the plot, a closer look at the main character and a look at themes in the book. It also provides alternate endings and an idea for a prequel - a feature Sidekicks have that I always enjoy. If you're looking to get a bit more information and a difference point of view on The Martian, this does the job nicely.

This is a must-have companion book for anybody who is a fan of The Martian. I always enjoy picking up companion books to some of my favorite novels, and this one was no exception. I enjoy them so much because it's like going to a book club, without actually going. With this sidekick, you get a different perspective of the original, including a deeper look into the characters.
