I'm a huge fan of books by No Starch Press. The texts are usually well written and every book I've read so far gives excellent examples that are broken down point by point with great explanations. I already have some basic SQL skills but decided to pick up this book anyway to round out my knowledge. Practical SQL definitely follows in the footsteps of other No Starch programming books. The written explanations provide the reader with great explanations of the SQL language and the code examples provide a lot of insight with point by point breakdown when necessary. One unique thing about this book compared to other SQL books is that the author has a research and journalism background. A lot of SQL books and tutorials I've come across focus on business databases. For those of us who aren't formally part of the business or technology fields and more oriented in the social sciences, this book is a tremendous resource. The author's problem-solving processes and example datasets (often real world examples) are great for social scientists that deal with real-world messy data.

A good book for postgreSQL. Well explained in details. Several practice problems after each chapter. And the code of the examples and practices problems has actually been uploaded on Github and I found it very useful while learning.

It was a good read but I won't recommend it as a reference book for SQL. Content could have been better.

I’m still going through this book because there’s so much info. The aim of this book is to give you the tools to tell a story with data via SQL using Postgres, which he does with flying colors! The main reason I bought the book, other than learning SQL, is there’s a chapter on PostGIS!!!Also, the reason I’m writing this review is that I had a question and the author responded the same day! It was a dumb question. I thought he would never answer it because it was a question I could’ve just Google/StackOverflow it or RTFM the Postgres docs. But he took the time and gave me the syntax as well as how to do it via PgAdmin step by step. As well as putting it in the FAQ for the GitHub repo for the book and looking at the chapter again to make sure that it’s clear. This may be odd, but I have to add this. I bought this book as an ebook so I can follow it easier while following along on my computer with the code samples with the books GitHub repo, which I found to be the best way to learn to programme when using computer books. But also I bought it from the publisher's site No Starch Press. This publishing house has the best programming books this side of the universe and this book is a great example of why I choose this publisher for programming books over publishers such as O'Reilly and them. The main point I’m getting at is, do yourself a favor and buy this book over their website and check out their catalog. Especially if you're wanting to find great books covering Python and Linux. You’ll thank me later. But buy this book first!!!PS I’ll write a second review after I finish PostGIS chapter.

Here's another intriguing No Starch book:SQL (Structured Query Language) is a programming language that pertains to databases, specifically how to create, manage and query them. It permits the user to go way beyond the limits of Excel and Access simply because among other things it allows a great deal more content in terms of rows and columns per worksheet and gigabytes of data.Anthony DeBarros takes the mystery out of SQL for readers of all levels, whether they are dealing with urban demographics or doing biological gene mapping. Windows, Mac and Linux installations are covered, so no one is left out.The author begins by stating that SQL is more than just a means for extracting knowledge from data. It's also a language for defining the structures that hold data so we can organize relationships in the data. Chief among those structures is the table. He goes on to define table, row and column, and from there the book really takes off.I enjoyed it immensely and if you are intrigued by these things, so will you.

This is my first SQL book and like it a lot. Explanation of language concepts is great and oriented towards total beginner, almost every code example is based on real world data, narrative is not convoluted that is great for non-native english readers. Good job.
