I'm new to the world of freelancing, so my review is coming from the perspective of a complete beginner.That said, this book has been super helpful in describing what to do and what to expect as a freelancer or consultant.I used this in conjunction with Zack's other book "30 days to your first freelance programming client" for a ready-made map of what to do.I am happy to say I landed my first client within the 30 days following these methods, and now I'm using the book as a reference on how to structure my business.If you're new to freelancing or consulting, I think this book will be helpful to get started. It certainly helped me.
Great book for programmers wanting to get into freelancing as coders and consultants. There's a lot of information here that's often overlooked or just 'assumed', and I think Zack and Jay have provided a tremendous amount of value in one little book. A must-read for those getting started as freelancers.
Offers plenty of useful information for getting into software consulting. Much of the material can likely be extended to many general consulting businesses. Contains a few chapters and sections on legal help and tax advise which should be hugely helpful. The authors are sure to remind the reader that a successful software consultant isn't just a coder, they're also businessmen. Doesn't put down full-time engineers (FTE) and provides pros and cons for being a FTE versus a freelance consultant. Goes beyond the scope of running a successful consulting business and touches on personal development and the possible lifestyle as a freelance consultant.When my current endeavors are complete and I can start a consulting business, this is likely a book I'll reference.This book unfortunately only receives 4 stars due to the frequent typos. Many words are missing, some words are typed twice, the highly elusive double space is reoccurring. Apparently chapter 12 was so important that there are two of them. Maybe chapter 11 leveled up since the editing of the book.
Great book - contains a variety of helpful tips, suggestions, and insights. It's something that you can both read through cover-to-cover, or use as a quick reference, as it's broken up into bite-sized sections. For someone just venturing into the world of freelance this would be helpful (and not just for software engineers).
Good for starting freelancers, good, if sometimes obvious, advises. Will not go back to it, but definitely will use the marked notes from throughout the books. Loved that they mentioned meditation :) and some great resources that are not strictly related to the software development, but crucial to organizing work and „behaving†around people
Reading this after a year of freelancing reaffirmed many observations and provided new insights. Wish I had known about it last year.
Just finished reading the kindle version of this book, great read! There's lots of good information from setting your rate, managing client expectations to ways to mange your taxes. My favorite part is the section about keeping a steady flow of clients coming in. All in all this is great read for any programmer looking to move into the world of freelancing.
